Allameh Shaykh Muhammad Husayn Gharavi, known as Muhaqqiq Isfahani and famously referred to as Kompani, is one of the prominent Neo-Sadrian philosophers who, in his work Tuhfat al-Hakim, presents an argument for the existence of God. Some scholars have interpreted this argument as a formulation of the Burhan al-Siddiqin (Proof of the Truthful), while others have likened it to Anselm’s ontological argument, even going so far as to consider Kompani the originator of the ontological proof within Islamic philosophy. This article aims to analyze the conceptual structure of his argument and demonstrate that it is founded not upon external reality, but upon the notion of the “Necessary Being” (wajib bi-dhat). Whereas the Burhan al-Siddiqin proceeds from the objective reality of existence to the necessity of a necessary existent, the ontological argument moves from the concept of existence to its actual instantiation. Kompani, relying solely on conceptual analysis and without reference to empirical reality, seeks to deduce the actual existence of God. By examining the ontological and epistemological foundations of this proof, the article reconsiders its place within the framework of Islamic philosophy and highlights its divergence from conventional formulations. It further argues that, despite its traditional appearance, Kompani’s argument embodies a novel approach to philosophical conceptualization—one that opens new horizons for understanding the relationship between concept and referent, and for rationally articulating divine existence within the Islamic philosophical tradition.
